Last summer, seven children and young people aged 10 to 13 from Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust’s (CNWL) Collingham Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) unit experienced a programme of therapeutic and fun activities funded by our generous supporters.
For these young people, who couldn’t go home over the summer break, the holidays can be especially difficult. Without the usual routine of school or time with family, the days can feel long and challenging, affecting mood and motivation. That’s why having positive activities to look forward to is so important.
Supporting mental and physical wellbeing
The summer programme included trips out in the community as well as activities on the unit such as arts and crafts, games, physical activities and group sessions. Together, these provided structure and routine, which is a vital part of the unit’s therapeutic programme.
Importantly, the young people helped shape the programme. Their ideas and interests guided the planning, ensuring the activities felt meaningful and enjoyable.
To support mental wellbeing, the group visited the Java Whiskers Cat Café and London Zoo. The visit to Java Whiskers was such a success that the young people have since returned. They also enjoyed baking sessions, including shopping for ingredients, and creative painting inspired by the Design Museum.
For physical wellbeing, trampolining sessions at Oxygen Acton became a highlight, helping to build confidence, encourage movement and have fun.
These trips outside the unit are also important for helping young people practise everyday life skills and feel more confident being out in the community.
What the young people said
The difference these experiences made is clear in their own words:
“The activities and trips help me feel happier when I can’t go home during the school holidays.”
“My favourite activity over the summer holidays was trampolining. I wish we could go every week!”
