Luke completes 100-mile challenge to give back to mental health services

After walking 100 miles in just 43 and a half hours, Luke has completed an extraordinary walking challenge for CNWL NHS Health Charity.

Luke previously received care at the Campbell Centre, an inpatient mental health unit in Milton Keynes run by Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust (CNWL).

Why Luke took on the challenge

For Luke, this challenge was about much more than the distance. Having experienced first-hand the support provided by the team at the Campbell Centre, he wanted to help create welcoming, therapeutic spaces where others could feel supported throughout their recovery.

Luke said:

"The mental health professionals were there for me when I felt like I had nowhere else to turn. They gave me the tools I needed to start healing and, with their support, I began my journey to recovery. To this day I still have my struggles, but I am the strongest I've ever been. I now have a loving partner, my children, my family and I've started my own small business."

Reflecting on why he chose to support the project, he said:

"Having been at the Campbell Centre, I know how even small improvements can really help. Looking back, I know it would have made my own recovery feel easier."

Luke is raising funds for the Milton Keynes Transformation Project. The project will help create more welcoming and therapeutic environments across the Campbell Centre, TOPAS Older People's Services and Cherrywood Rehabilitation Centre, enhancing the experience of care for patients, families, carers and staff alongside the treatment provided by NHS teams.

"I did it for the Campbell Centre, for myself, and for my family."

The 100-mile walk

Luke set off from the Campbell Centre in the early hours of Tuesday 21 July, beginning an epic journey to CNWL's Trust Headquarters in central London before making the return journey to Milton Keynes.

After almost 15 hours of walking through the day and night, Luke reached Trust Headquarters, marking the halfway point of his challenge. With another 50 miles still ahead of him, the return journey would prove to be the toughest part.

The challenge tested Luke both physically and mentally, but he remained determined to keep going and supporting a cause close to his heart.

After 43 and a half hours on the road, Luke arrived back at the Campbell Centre, where he was welcomed by his family and supporters, bringing an emotional end to an extraordinary achievement.

At the finish, Luke said:

"Massive thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout. I can't thank you enough for getting me to the finish line."

Continuing to give back

This isn't Luke's first fundraising challenge for CNWL NHS Health Charity. In 2021, he completed a 2,000-mile motorcycle ride, over four days in support of Milton Keynes mental health services. He raised £2,900 and continues to thank the Service that supported him.

Support Luke's fundraising

Although the challenge is complete, Luke's fundraising continues. He's currently raised over £2,400 and is not stopping there. Every donation will help create more therapeutic mental health environments across Milton Keynes, supporting future patients. Support his fundraising by donating to his JustGiving page.
